Our Black Australorp Chickens
The Black Australorp Chicken was developed in Australia from English Black Orpington breed. They were introduced to the United States in the 1920s. They produce a good volume of light brown eggs, and hold a laying record for a single hen which layed 364 eggs in 365 days. The Cockerels (Roosters) average 6-8+ pounds and the Pullets mature to 5-7 pounds. The hens start laying at 5-6 months of age.
We
became interested in the breed because of its very flashy black plumage which
shimmers greenish-purple in sunlight. It will make a dramatic addition to your
flock. The King of our flock is an Australorp Cockerel who we named “Austro”
and he weighs in at nearly 10 pounds! He is easily handled and his bright red
comb contrasts quite dramatically against his black feathers.
